This course pursues three main objectives. First, it provides an overview of recent trends and developments in communication research, with a particular focus on the intersection of communication studies and media economics. Throughout the semester, students will engage with current academic debates to establish a shared foundation for understanding the field's evolving research landscape.Second, the course aims to foster a critical and reflective engagement with academic literature. Students will analyze a range of scholarly texts and present selected readings in class. These presentations are mandatory and are expected to go beyond mere summaries by demonstrating the ability to transfer, contextualize, and critically assess the respective research approaches. A key focus will lie on recognizing and evaluating different theoretical perspectives and methodological designs within the discipline.
Third, the course includes a practical writing component that supports students in developing their academic writing skills. Through a series of exercises, we will spotlight and practice key elements of scholarly writing, such as introductions, theory sections, literature reviews, and conclusions, always with reference to current topics in the field. The goal is to strengthen students’ ability to independently and effectively engage with academic literature and use it as a basis for their own research projects.
